What Kind Of Material Should I Use For Indoor Use: Natural Or Engineered Stone?

Both our natural and engineered stone ranges are suitable for indoor use, but there are differences to bear in mind when choosing the material for your project.

Among the natural stone types, marble, travertine, and limestone are often chosen for their natural beauty. However, they are porous materials and

therefore not immune to staining, etching and scratching. Granite, while also a natural stone, is more resistant on all counts, and is therefore often selected for kitchen tops.

All of these, as well as other natural materials such as slate and sandstone, are naturally porous and should be sealed. With proper sealing and care – particularly in wiping out spills as quickly as possible – natural stone should retain its beauty for years.

Alternatively, our range of engineered materials, including quartz, porcelain and lava stone, are less porous and more stain resistant than any of the natural stone types. However, all should be treated with care as they are not completely immune to high heat, harsh abrasives, and strong chemicals. Please check our engineered stone suppliers’ websites – Compac (quartz), The Size (porcelain), Lapyk (lava stone) – for further technical specifications.

Our knowledgeable staff will be happy to advise you on the most suitable material for your project.

Is Marble a Suitable Material For Worktops?

Although marble and granite share a number of properties, not least their undeniable beauty, they are in fact very different materials. However, marble is just as suitable for worktops as granite, although it must be noted that it is more porous than granite and so more susceptible to staining, etching and scratching. Please consult with our office to get further information on this.

Should I Use a Sealant On My Stones?

If it is natural stone, sealant is highly recommended. Please check with your fabricator or installer for advice on this.
